A late reply to “I love you” (Narrative Poem)

Standing in the cold rain

Clothes soaked and my shirt is stained

A smile on my face

Breathing for something.

Fork in hand dinner and our 5th date

Without a glimpse without a bite

I can feel her gaze

Fork in hand but a pause waiting for something she has to say.

“I love you” she states.

A cough escapes

My pupils jump to her face

A fork is in her hand she’s eating cake.

It’s been years since the last I given up on anything sincere

What she has said is what I’ve been wanting to hear

My heart is a spring but my brain is full of fear

Inside my mind I fought to decipher the words you speared

For it was to soon I am too weak how they went through now my blood is smeared.

Promise me this

When it’s time for you to go

Let me down gently

Allow me to confuse the rain that runs on my face for the tears that will come heavy

But yes to you to everything.

I finally speak with my hand on top of her fork

My gaze fixated on her.

“I love you too Elinor”.
